Rapid City is working toward the development of an innovation hub that connects the SD Mines campus to the downtown core and additional employment and housing options. Elevate Rapid City is working with the local business community, innovators in the field of autonomous equipment, and economic development experts to develop a strategy for Rapid City’s growth as an Innovation Hub.

The primary focus of the Innovation Hub planning is the east side of Downtown Rapid City.

 

  • Research: University connection to the public focused on research and Mines-led innovation

  • Maple: Mixed-use commercial zone that allows the ability for Mines-led innovation and private sector innovation to collide

  • Gateway: The extension of historic downtown - think commercial and some housing with active transportation

  • Sandbox: Big spaces for testing ideas; collaborative area for prototyping, machining, etc.

  • Missing Middle: Area for a variety of housing that meets the needs of all those who want to live in the district with some innovation spaces sprinkled throughout

  • Highway Safety: The buffer area for the state highway/Omaha St

Innovation District planning is nearly complete! Draft plans are in hand and the steering committee members are reviewing these plans and gathering the last bits of stakeholder feedback. The plans will be made available on this site for review. The plans will help create a foundation for identifying the locations that are most promising for redevelopment as part of the innovation district. Plans include ideas for Innovation Spaces; Housing, Retail & Services; Parks, Plazas, & Greenways; Transportation & Mobility; and Implementation & Governance. Next steps include prioritizing redevelopment and finding funding for said redevelopment.
