A new era of medical imaging has arrived in western South Dakota. Sanford Health Black Hills Imaging Center recently marked the installation of South Dakota's first photon-counting CT scanner with a ribbon cutting celebration at its facility, located at 215 Anamaria Drive in Rapid City.
The investment brings one of the nation's most advanced CT imaging technologies to the Black Hills, expanding access to high-quality diagnostic care for patients throughout the region. While the scanner offers significant advancements for cardiovascular imaging, it also enhances diagnostic capabilities for emergency medicine, oncology, orthopedics, and many other specialties.
Black Hills Imaging Center has served the Rapid City community since 2013. Originally established through a partnership focused on advanced ultrasound services, the center has grown into a full-service diagnostic imaging provider known for delivering high-quality care close to home. Throughout its history, the organization has continued to invest in new technologies, including South Dakota's first MRI Caring Suite in 2017, designed to create a more comfortable and calming imaging experience for patients.

The imaging center entered a new chapter in November 2024 when Sanford Health acquired Black Hills Surgical Hospital and its affiliated services, including Black Hills Imaging Center. The acquisition expanded Sanford Health's presence in western South Dakota while reinforcing a long-term investment in providing advanced healthcare services throughout the region.
The addition of the photon-counting CT scanner represents another step forward in that commitment. The technology produces exceptionally detailed images while using lower radiation doses than traditional CT scanners, allowing physicians to detect disease earlier, improve diagnostic accuracy, and make more informed treatment decisions.
"Bringing South Dakota's first photon-counting CT scanner to Rapid City reflects our commitment to providing patients with access to leading-edge technology without having to leave the Black Hills," said Kyle Wiese. "We're proud to continue investing in this community and to expand the advanced imaging services available to patients and providers throughout western South Dakota."
Wiese also credited the region's collaborative healthcare community for helping advance patient care.
"Strong partnerships across western South Dakota allow us to continually improve the services available to patients," he said. "Working alongside providers throughout the region helps ensure people have access to exceptional care close to home."
Elevate Rapid City recognized the investment as another example of how continued healthcare innovation strengthens the region. "Access to advanced healthcare is an important part of a thriving community," said interim CEO, Todd Kenner. "Investments like this improve quality of life for residents while reinforcing Rapid City's role as the regional hub for healthcare, innovation, and specialized medical services."
As western South Dakota continues to grow, investments in cutting-edge healthcare technology help ensure residents can receive world-class care without traveling outside the region. The arrival of South Dakota's first photon-counting CT scanner demonstrates how innovation, collaboration, and long-term investment continue to enhance both patient care and the overall strength of the regional economy.
