On Wednesday, December 3rd, Elevate Rapid City joined American Storage to celebrate the grand opening of the community’s newest self-storage and parking facility, located at 669 Century Road. The ribbon cutting marked the beginning of a new chapter for a family whose Rapid City story began nearly two decades ago.
For owners Sony and Jeevan Meruga, American Storage is more than a business venture—it is the continuation of a journey that began 16 years ago when they moved to Rapid City as international students attending the South Dakota School of Mines & Technology. What started as a new adventure in a new country quickly turned into a deep sense of belonging.
After earning their degrees and choosing to stay, the Merugas built their lives, careers, and family here. They describe America as “a land of endless opportunity,” and becoming U.S. citizens five years ago remains one of their proudest milestones. Their gratitude for the community that welcomed them is the foundation of American Storage.

The ribbon cutting celebrated the opening of a brand-new self-storage and parking facility, offering modern, secure options for residents and businesses. For now, Sony and Jeevan will manage the facility themselves, an intentional choice that allows them to stay closely connected to customers during this important first chapter.
Located just off Century Road, the site provides convenient access for people who need flexible space, whether for short-term transitions or long-term storage.

The Merugas shared what it means to launch their first business in the community they’ve called home for so long:
“I’m proud to be part of the Rapid City business community because this city welcomed my family, supported our growth, and inspired us to pursue our dreams. The hard-working, community-driven spirit of Rapid City motivates me, and it’s an honor to contribute to a place that has given us so much.”
— Jeevan Meruga, Co-Owner
American Storage represents what makes Rapid City’s business landscape so resilient: people who choose this community, invest in it, and build opportunities for others. As the Merugas open their doors, they’re adding more than square footage, they’re adding a story of gratitude, entrepreneurship, and the belief that possibility lives here.
American Storage is a reminder of what makes Rapid City special, people who arrive here, find a sense of belonging, and choose to plant roots that strengthen the whole community. Sony and Jeevan are opening more than a new facility; they’re opening a space built on gratitude, hard work, and the belief that opportunity grows when we support one another. We’re excited to see their business thrive and grateful to have them investing their future right here in Rapid City.
