October is National Manufacturing Month, and to spotlight the region’s growing industry, Elevate Rapid City and the Black Hills Manufacturing Alliance launched the inaugural Coolest Thing Made in the Black Hills competition.

Six local manufacturers competed in a public vote, with the winner announced at the Manufacturing and Trade Summit held on October 2 in Rapid City. The 2025 Coolest Thing Made in the Black Hills is the Smart Sign Controller by Divergent Designs.

Developed in partnership with Black Hills Federal Credit Union, the Smart Sign Controller enhances privacy for virtual teller machines. Using a discreet radar sensor, it signals when kiosks or registers are available without exposing customer activity. The customizable sensor can be fully concealed, ensuring both privacy and modern aesthetics.

“Manufacturing in the Black Hills is constantly evolving, and the Smart Sign Controller is a perfect example of local innovation that meets real-world needs,” said Kallie Ruland, Elevate Rapid City business development manager. “This competition not only celebrates creativity but also underscores the critical role manufacturers play in strengthening our regional economy.”
