Investor Spotlight: Great Plains Welding Academy

Published Friday, November 8, 2024

Great Plains Welding Academy (GPWA) is more than just a welding school—it’s a community where students come to ignite their welding goals. Established with a passion for the trade, GPWA is driven by one mission: to inspire and create the next generation of skilled welders, all while eliminating the barriers that can come with a traditional two-year program.

Founded by Tommy and Brianna Myers, GPWA was created to address a gap in the industry and bring more passionate welders to the trade. They often hear from students who want to pursue welding but feel discouraged by the 1-2 year programs filled with general education courses that don’t align with their talents. As a result, many don’t pursue it at all. GPWA flips that model on its head by offering an accelerated, hands-on training program that focuses solely on what matters most—welding. With small class sizes and a low student-to-instructor ratio, each student receives personalized attention, making it easier to build trust, master techniques, and gain real-world experience.

GPWA, in business since December 2022, also has a full-time instructor Sean Clary, whose real-world experience makes him a valuable part of the team. The relationships they’ve built in the industry show just how much GPWA values the local community. "If it wasn’t for the businesses eager to bring on our students, the support for our program, and the community behind us, we wouldn’t be able to make the impact we are today," says Brianna Myers.

At GPWA, students can complete the program in as little as 12 weeks and walk away with 8 industry-standard certifications, preparing them for immediate job opportunities. From the very first day, students are immersed in 90% shop time, giving them the hands-on learning they need to feel confident in their craft.

“We understand that not everyone wants to spend two years in school. Our goal is to give students everything they need to succeed in welding without the extra fluff and to be able to move at their own pace,” says Tommy Myers, President of GPWA. “We’ve built this academy on the foundation of community, and it feels like family here.”

With ties to the local industry and a commitment to seeing students thrive, GPWA offers more than just welding education—they help open doors. Students at GPWA gain access to a network of local businesses and welding professionals who are eager to hire graduates. The academy also provides real-life experiences, reading blueprints and field trips to welding shops and companies to give students a full understanding of what to expect in the field.

Whether you're looking to start a new career or refine your welding skills, Great Plains Welding Academy is the place to begin. With a proven, hands-on approach and a shop-oriented atmosphere, GPWA is shaping the future of the welding industry one student at a time.
