Workforce Disability Network of the Black Hills (WDNBH), founded in June 2014, proudly celebrates its 10th anniversary this year. Over the past decade, WDNBH has become a cornerstone of support and advocacy for businesses and individuals with disabilities in the Black Hills. The organization’s mission is to connect businesses with the resources needed to create inclusive work environments, providing essential support for building accessible and diverse workforces.

As part of this milestone celebration, WDNBH is launching the Disability Inclusive Business Ally Program, which recognizes businesses committed to hiring and supporting individuals with disabilities. The program emphasizes building long-term partnerships rather than offering one-time recognition. By displaying these awards prominently, businesses send a clear message: they value inclusion and employ people with disabilities. Recognized businesses will also be listed on WDNBH’s website.

In addition to the Ally Program, WDNBH is rolling out new initiatives, including enhanced donation and resource web pages to better support the community and provide valuable information. This reflects the organization’s commitment to modernizing outreach and improving accessibility for businesses and individuals alike.

WDNBH recently welcomed Heidi Mecham as its new Executive Director. With extensive experience in nonprofit management, grant administration, and community engagement, Heidi is well-equipped to lead WDNBH into its next chapter. She is dedicated to driving the organization’s mission forward and advancing disability inclusion throughout the Black Hills.

In celebration of National Disability Employment Awareness Month (NDEAM), WDNBH is hosting a Lunch and Learn event to raise awareness about the importance of inclusive workplaces and the positive impact individuals with disabilities have on businesses and communities. This year’s theme, "Taking the Scary Out of the ADA," will focus on demystifying ADA compliance for employers. Guest speakers Paula McInerney-Hall, Attorney, and Moni Patterson, HR Generalist & ADA Compliance expert from Monument Health, will lead a session covering practical strategies for accommodating and integrating employees with disabilities. This training is approved by BHSHRM for 2.0 Recertification Credit Hours toward SHRM-CP and SHRM-SCP certifications.

The October 17 luncheon will also provide networking opportunities for local businesses to share best practices and insights on disability employment. WDNBH hopes to inspire meaningful changes in how businesses approach disability inclusion, fostering more equitable workplaces across the Black Hills region. Click here to learn more.
