The Helpline Center’s mission is to enhance lives through unwavering support, hope, and connections every day, around the clock. They achieve this through various services such as 211 Helpline, 988 Lifeline, Volunteer Connections, Suicide Grief Support and more.
Since its inception 50 years ago, the Helpline Center has evolved from a volunteer-based organization to a full-staffed agency, offering 24/7 support. In 2001, it became the first center west of the Mississippi River to launch the 211 service. Each year, they assist thousands by connecting them with resources, providing referrals, building community volunteer networks, offering hope to those with suicidal thoughts, and supporting families coping with suicide loss. The organization supports over 100,000 individuals annually and is the only organization in South Dakota accredited by the Alliance for Information and Referral Systems and certified by the American Association of Suicidology for crisis intervention.
The 437 Project was founded to promote physical and mental wellness and highlight their interconnectedness all while raising funds to support the Helpline Center. The funds will help provide essential support and resources for those affected by suicide and navigating grief.
This year on Thursday, September 19, a team of twelve community leaders will embark on their third annual 437-mile run across South Dakota. This year’s team includes Martin Wennblom, a middle school teacher from Rapid City. The run will pass through numerous counties and include community events in Rapid City, Pierre and Mitchell. The finish line celebration in Sioux Falls will take place on Sunday, September 22.

John Meyer, Founder of Leadmore and Director of Leadership South Dakota, who is returning for his second year, shared, “I participated last year and was impressed by the cause. After running, I now believe it is THE cause. This work is crucial and the project is making a significant impact.”
In 2023, thanks to remarkable community support, The 437 Project raised over $250,000 for the Helpline Center. These funds were used to create resources for survivors, support specialized training for staff, and expand the suicide prevention program. The Black Hills community is invited to The 437 Project Community Event on Wednesday, September 18, from 5-7 PM MST at the Hilton Garden Inn (815 E. Mall Drive). This event will feature food and drinks, provide information on available resources, allow you to meet the team, and support them as they begin their statewide journey.
