Lost&Found, the largest youth and young adult suicide prevention and loss survivor nonprofit in the area, has been a beacon of hope and support for many communities across South Dakota and Minnesota. Since its inception in 2010 by five dedicated 18-year-old students from the Mitchell, SD area, Lost&Found has grown to provide life-saving programs and resources to over 40 communities.
Three and a half years ago, Lost&Found expanded to the Black Hills. In that time, they have invested in new programs and services to prevent suicide in the region. These include community education partnership with United Way of the Black Hills, new tools for the workplace, and additional investment in suicide loss survivor support.
A recent Elevate Rapid City Ribbon Cutting event at the SD Mines Devereaux Library celebrated the work Lost&Found has already accomplished in their time here, as well as the hope for what is to come.

"Lost&Found is proud to be a member of the Rapid City community and continue our vital partnerships in the Black Hills,” said Lost&Found CEO, Erik Muckey. “Today's ribbon cutting is an important acknowledgment that more work remains to be done in suicide prevention, especially for our next generation. We're invested in the Black Hills, and the ribbon cutting is a symbolic way for us to show we're here to do more for our community and prevent suicide."
The event not only celebrated Lost&Found's achievements but also underscored the value of being a member of Elevate Rapid City. By being part of this dynamic chamber of commerce and economic development organization, businesses like Lost&Found can leverage a robust network of support, resources, and partnerships that are crucial for growth and community impact.
Rapid City is not just a thriving and growing community; it recognizes its responsibility to care for its residents. “The immense care shown by South Dakota Mines campus and community leaders for those experiencing suicide risk and ideation is commendable,” Muckey added. “Events like these reinforce the importance of collective efforts in making our community a safer and more supportive place for everyone.”
