The Elevate Leadership Institute (ELI) continues to inspire and mold future leaders through its dynamic sessions. Most recently, the ninth and final session of ELI highlighted the importance of adaptability, innovation, and authenticity when acting as a leader within the community.
The session began with a deep dive into John P. Kotter's Leading Change, emphasizing the difficulty of instilling long-term organizational cultural change. Leaders must provide sustained attention to ensure new cultures take root, preventing old habits from resurfacing. This foundational understanding set the stage for the day's activities.
A tour of the B1 Bomber on Ellsworth Air Force Base offered the class a rare glimpse into the operational intricacies of this advanced aircraft. Climbing into the cockpit, they experienced the cramped quarters and complex controls firsthand, learning about the crew's roles and the aircraft's capabilities.
Matt Curley (Rapid City Fire Department)was struck by the aircraft's agility and the crew's endurance: "I found it interesting how fast (the B1s) can go, and more so, how maneuverable they are, even including doing a full barrel roll. It was interesting how small the crew cabin was and that they stayed in there for such long stints."
Reece Weber (Costello Porter Law Firm)appreciated the technology and collaboration between the pilots and maintenance crew: "The B1 Bomber was mesmerizing. The amount of technology in a square foot of that aircraft may be more than I'll ever see again. It is truly a testament to what a team of inspired individuals can accomplish when striving to reach a common goal."
Chief Master Sergeant Thomas Carpino (US Air Force) shared his perspectives on workplace culture and authentic leadership. He discussed "situational leadership," tailoring leadership styles to fit the needs of different generations, and his innovative approach to gathering feedback from younger airmen using QR codes.
Mark Falcon (Loyal Plumbing) found this particularly enlightening: "I believe he used the term 'situational leadership.' That was very important to me because recognizing and developing situational leadership is necessary in moving people forward."
Amy DiRienzo (SD Mines) appreciated Carpino's innovative feedback method: "Implementing a QR code system to submit feedback allowed him to reach those he was struggling to connect with. I have experienced the same challenge working with college students and plan to try the same strategy!"
Isaiah Judge (JJ Advisor Group) valued Chief Master Sergeant Carpino's authenticity: "The most significant lesson I learned from CMSgt Carpino was the importance of meeting people where they are and being authentic, especially in leadership."
Lorie Vega, head of the innovation hub at Ellsworth AFB, showcased cutting-edge projects like robotic security dogs and portable LED lighting strips. Her passion for fostering innovation and connecting local businesses with the Air Force inspired participants to think creatively and embrace teamwork.
Dani Benne (Visit Rapid City) reflected on the importance of team diversity: "Ms. Vega's presentation prompted a deeper reflection on leadership – the significance of assembling the right team for any task."
Alexcia Kalal (Rapid City Police Department) was amazed by the hub's projects: "I was completely amazed listening to Ms. Vega discussing all of the incredible projects underway at the Ellsworth AFB RaiderWerx innovation hub."
Session 9 provided new insights and built on previous sessions, highlighting the importance of cultural diversity and innovation. Jen Potts (Monument Health) noted the synergy: "Our session 9 helped me see just well the military designs and innovates around cultural diversity."
