In Session 6 of the Elevate Leadership Institute (ELI), the class explored the art of public speaking and the role of effective facilitation. Led by industry experts, Session 6 included engaging activities, and meaningful takeaways.

Lori Cope (Leadership Consultant) and Dani Herring (Leadership Consultant) led the discussion on unraveling the challenges of public speaking, emphasizing the "Power of Three" in crafting compelling messages. From overcoming common fears to mastering the art of authenticity, participants learned practical tips to captivate audiences and leave a lasting impression.

"While you're speaking, be your authentic self,” Herring advised. “Don't try to be perfect." This sentiment resonated with many as they grasped the power of embracing their unique voice and perspective.

Participants improved their Power of Three and public speaking skills through interactive exercises and lively discussions, learning to navigate complex group dynamics. The class was tasked with crafting a three-minute speech on a topic of their choice, resulting in diverse presentations ranging from competitive gymnastics to the Superbowl, plumbing, and even Dolly Parton.

When Tara Wilcox (Director of NonProfit Development) presented to the class, she added, "Facilitation is a process, not an event." She facilitated an activity called Displayed Planning, where participants were divided into tables and tasked with planning a company Christmas Party. Each group outlined the purpose, attendees, logistics, and promotion strategy, engaging in collaborative decision-making.

An additional activity followed, focusing on Participation Scenarios during meetings, where groups were presented with various meeting scenarios and tasked with devising effective facilitation strategies to manage the discussions.

Beyond refining specific skills, the ELI class gained a better understanding of their leadership potential. They gained insight on the transformative impact they can have on their organizations and communities. From confronting fears to embracing feedback, each session has served as a stepping-stone toward personal and professional growth.

This session of ELI built upon previous learnings by providing deeper insights into the components of Emotional Quotient Inventory (EQi) and Intercultural Development Inventory (IDI) results that contribute to effective public speaking and facilitation.

Reflecting on the session, Daryl Fierro (Omnitech Inc.) shared, "When we started this course as a group, we all fell into the minimization category [of IDI]. Now we have learned that giving feedback to everyone in the same way is not actually fair like we thought." This is exactly what ELI is about – empowering leaders to build self-confidence and gain valuable skills.
