Activities to make the 2024 winter season fun in Rapid City

As the winter season blankets Rapid City in a layer of snow, the Black Hills transform into a wonderland with an abundance of fun outdoor and indoor adventures. Here are some enjoyable things to do in Rapid City and throughout the Black Hills during the winter months:

Skiing and Snowboarding 

Head to nearby Terry Peak for some skiing, snowboarding, and even sledding opportunities.  

Snowshoeing and Cross-Country Skiing 

Explore the scenic winter landscapes by trying snowshoeing or cross-country skiing on the numerous trails in the Black Hills National Forest

Winter Hiking


Many hiking trails remain open in the winter, providing a unique and serene experience with snow-covered landscapes. Popular trails include the Mickelson Trail and the Buzzards Roost

Ice Skating 

Enjoy outdoor ice skating at Main Street Square in downtown Rapid City

Take a drive through Custer State Park to witness the beauty of winter wildlife, including bison, elk, and deer against a snowy backdrop.

For those who enjoy fishing, several lakes and streams in the area remain open for winter fishing, providing a tranquil experience. Many locals say Sheridan Lake and Pactola Lake are some of the best ice fishing spots.

Explore the city's historical attractions, such as the Journey Museum, showcasing the region's history, geology, and paleontology.
