The Chamber Music Festival of the Black Hills (CMFBH) was founded in 2008 at the Homestake Opera House in Lead, SD by Rapid City native, Michael Hill and his wife Dawn Marie Edwards as a way to give back to the community. Within two years, the organization grew at a fast pace requiring their relocation of operations to Rapid City with concert and educational programming throughout the Black Hills and Pine Ridge. The Classical Concert Series is currently hosted at the Journey Museum and Learning Center.

Over the past 15 years, CMFBH has served over 36,000 attending children throughout the area with free educational programming implemented by professional musicians and educators from the top orchestras and conservatories. Their staff, musicians, and educators are fully employed by Atlanta Symphony, Minnesota Orchestra, National Symphony, Orlando Philharmonic, St. Paul Chamber, University of California, Curtis Institute of Music, and University of Central Florida.
This past season, CMFBH presented more than 100 free educational programs throughout the Black Hills.

Their success is based on collaboration with community partners. Methodically working together, CMFBH presents programs and events specifically designed for the children they serve. The focus of their free educational programs is underserved children and their goal is to overcome socio-economic obstacles with interactive educational opportunities utilizing arts as a tool to higher educational/social outcomes. CMFBH's programs are designed to assist students to develop leadership skills and to advance their academic and social achievements. Their motto is: Overcome Obstacles through Opportunities.
Collaboration continues with the Classical Concert Series hosted by the Journey Museum and Learning Center featuring CMFBH's Grammy awarded and top professional musicians. An exciting series of concerts with each work carefully selected for your musical enjoyment. Don't miss this opportunity to hear world-class musicians performing some of the greatest music ever composed. To quote one of their Grammy awarded musicians, “at this point of my career, I’m fortunate to pick and choose the work I’m willing to accept. I love coming to the Black Hills each summer and love the work you do for the community.”
CMFBH proudly displays their awards from the National Endowment for the Arts placing them among nationally recognized arts organizations and 2nd place in Europe’s largest Native American film festival. Although, they are most proud of the assistance they have given in the award of $100,000+ in scholarships to local students as they pursue their career goals.
