The Black Hills is the proud home of Ellsworth Air Force Base and South Dakota National Guard's Camp Rapid. As of December 31, 2019, there are more than 8500 military children in our community. These kids often sacrifice the opportunity to have their parents at a concert, sporting event, birthday party, and more. April is the Month of the Military Child (MOMC). Being a part of "Purple Up" is a great opportunity to recognize and honor their unique contributions and sacrifices.

We would encourage the Rapid City Business community to participate and show support. Here are a few ideas!
Ways your business can participate to celebrate the month of the military child:
1. Wear purple every Friday. April 21 is "Purple Up Day" - be sure to take a team photo and share on your social media! Wearing purple is a visible way for everyone to show support and thank military youth for their strength and sacrifices. Why purple? Purple references the joint environment of the military, encompassing all service branches, Active Duty, Reserve, National Guard, and Veterans. Purple combines each branch’s colors into one: the Air Force, Navy, and Coast Guard all use shades of blue, the Army uses green, and the Marines use red.

2. Do you have an exterior sign that includes an interchangeable message? Change your message for the month!
3. Find a unique way your industry can get involved! In the food business and offer a food item that is a shade of purple? Grape flavored? Ice cream? Have a special promotion around it! If you are a retail store you could show your participation for Month of the Military Child by offering a special discount on purple items or for military families. Rapid City is full of amazing attractions, events, and family-friendly things to do. Offer a special discount for military families or select one night in April to do a special event just for them!

We look forward to seeing how Rapid City and the Black Hills Community purple up and show support the month of April - The Month of the Military Child.
