Vote Black Hills - 2022 Election

VoteBlackHills.com Initiative Launches to Encourage Voter Turnout

Published Wednesday, October 5, 2022

Elevate Rapid City and HomeSlice Media have partnered with local businesses Lost Cabin Beer Co. and Pure Bean Coffeehouse to launch the “Vote Black Hills” initiative.

The mission is simple: encourage people to vote.

On average, only 1 in 3 registered voters cast their ballot in the past eight years in Pennington County. This represents a lot of voices not being heard. In one election, it was a difference of only 17 votes.

“This is a non-political effort,” said Brad 'Murdoc' Jurgensen, President of HomeSlice Media. “The most valuable thing you can do is make your voice heard in a local election. We're hoping to build turnout past the social media comment. No matter what your beliefs are. We are excited to work with our partners to encourage that message.”

Black Hills area residents are encouraged to “pledge” to vote in the 2022 election by filling out a form at VoteBlackHills.com. In thanks for their commitment to vote on or before November 8, local businesses Lost Cabin and Pure Bean are offering a coupon for a free beer (for those over 21) or coffee.

“There is nothing more important for a healthy democracy than voting, so I (and Pure Bean) am always a supporter and encourager to vote,” said Nick Reid. “It doesn’t matter which side you’re on, as long as you make your voice heard in the ballot box.”

Tom Johnson, President & CEO of Elevate Rapid City added, “The recent political climate has resulted in a lot of voter apathy, especially for younger voters. Many are choosing to stay home instead of being a part of the change they crave. If we want quality schools for our children, infrastructure, and quality of life, we must make our voices heard at the polls. That’s the only way we will continue to elevate the region for all and make it a place people want to be.”

"We always encourage people to get out and vote,” said Jesse Scheitler, co-founder of Lost Cabin Beer Co. “This isn't about which party or candidate you support, it's about being a part of the process. It's like Rock the Vote, but with beer."
