What's in a name?

From taproom staff and beer drinking patrons to a friendly neighborhood pigeon, inspiration for the Lost Cabin beer names is as varied as the selections. "Everything from the recipes to the names to the can designs - everything is sourced from everybody, "said Jesse Scheitler, co-founder and CEO of Lost Cabin. "Everybody has input into our creative process."

Many of the names tie back to the Black Hills including the Buzzards Roost, a black IPA, named after the local hiking trail and the Irish Red Hobo Queen is inspired by a ski run at Terry Peak. The potent and popular Lord Grizzly is a homage to Hugh Glass, the American frontiersman who survived a bear attack near present-day Lemmon, S.D., and walked hundreds of miles to safety. A perfect beer to pair with the legend.

One beer name came from a chance encounter with a pigeon who the staff later named Jerry. "He became our Lost Cabin mascot," said Steph Silbernagel, sales and event manager. "He used to hang out every day. He would come into the brewery and hang out on the garage doors. We don't know what ever happened to Jerry." Jerry's spirit lives on through the chardonnay barrel aged saison with the same name.
